about

Saqraruna's "Under the Light of Mountains" takes me back to the days when black metal still had some street cred.
Before bands like Gorgoroth flopped around like waterless fish searching for Satanic riffs on the floor of an alcohol-soaked pub; riffs that got lost in the shuffle and stress of trying to cater to an audience consisting of pop culture fanatics.
Before Dark Funeral lost the entire plot and fell all over themselves trying to recapture some of that old Swedish black magic; magic turned sour by a need to pay off some longstanding debt and a heavy longing to be accepted by the lowest common denominator in a quest for endless cheese.
I don't know what more can be said about this album. It's what my ears needed to hear in this future time where black metal is just something we reminisce about because no one makes it anymore.
Saqraruna takes everything about black metal you love and wraps it up into a true black ball of rolling, glowing, Hell-energy. A ghastly, ghostly trip into the old church, with swirling anti-melodies forming a lightning strike of darkness. It's rare for a new band to get my ears back to the old days and it's even rarer for a new band to make me reminisce fondly about those old days.
The feeling you felt the first time you heard black metal is here to re-introduce itself in "Under the Light of Mountains."
